With the holiday weekend up ahead, I thought I’d share the recipe for the absolutely delicious BBQ Sauce I recently bbqsauce1made.   Now, I know it’s much easier to head to the grocery store, grab a bottle off the shelf and enjoy.  But there is a special magic in taking raw ingredients and turning into spoon-licking awesomeness.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups tomato paste
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup vinegar
  • 1 chopped onion
  • 1 chopped shallot
  • 5 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 5 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground mustard
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon paprika

Directions:  In a medium saucepan, combine all ingredients. Bring mixture to a boil, reduce heat to simmer. Cook uncovered, stirring frequently, for 1 hour 15 minutes.   Put it in a jar or bottle and refrigerate.

Want suggestions for using this sauce?  I’ve been using this sauce on chicken and beans.  For chicken, marinade chicken breasts or chicken thighs in a ziplock bag for 8 to 24 hours and then toss on the grill.    I’ve also made shisk-k-bobs with marinated chicken for a full meal-on-a-stick.  Want BBQ Beans?  Add 1/2 cup of sauce to can of pinto or kidney beans and simmer.

What about you?  Do you have a favorite BBQ Sauce recipe?  I’d love for you to share!
